VR Project, Balloon Shooter, Early Research

Writer's picture: Esther WEsther W

Having never actually done a project in VR before, I set out to explore how to get both Oculus and HTC Vive could be accessed via unity.

First mistake, using 2018 version, I imported the package steam VR and explored how to get my VR kit to pick up an object. This is the screen that had me stumped.

At this point I had gotten the balloons spawning with a little help with a consultant programmer (Read programming teacher at client’s workplace). That included the ability to have more than one type of object spawning, the ability to edit how many spawned total, to choice the area they would spawn in, and a designer chosen delay in spawn time. An attempt at creating wind force to randomize how the balloons moved was attempted.

I think I have found a better way to manage wind direction but not yet tested.

Further explorations had me discovering that the 2019 version and above had internal unity packages I could add to my project that supported both HTC Vive and Oculus rift without need for the steam VR package.

This, below, is the final view of the project before I started a new version of the project.
